Name change for CCPR

The Sport and Recreation Alliance is the new name for the CCPR (Central Council for Physical Recreation).

The change of name follows a long period of consultation within the organisation, including new president, HRH the Earl of Wessex.

Brigid Simmons, chair of the CCPR, believes the name change will help the organisation communicate the views of the sport and recreation community more effectively. She said that the aim of this change is simply to represent the members better and that feedback had told her that the old CCPR name was an impediment. “Especially for those who are new to sport and recreation. As an organisation which seeks to be influential and well-known, that is a real barrier to meeting our objectives,” she said.

Simmons commented, “The name CCPR has served us well for 66 of our 75 years. But just as in 1944 when the organisation changed its name to reflect its role, so we feel that the same move is necessary. Hopefully the new name will last even longer.”

Critically, Simmons pointed out that the organisation would remain the same and retain its culture, its staff, its values and its goals.

“But we feel this new name helps reflect all of those facets better - and will help those outside the organisation understand them better too,” she said.
